Riichi: Yakuhai (Value Honors)

What is yakuhai?

Yakuhai means value honors: a pung (or kong) of white, green, or red dragons, or of your seat wind or the round wind. Each qualifying set is worth one han. Yakuhai is a staple riichi yakuhai teaching topic because it does not require a pure shape.

Teaching notes

Beginners confuse yakuhai with ordinary wind pungs that are not seat/prevalent. Highlight which honor is scored and whether the set is open or closed. Yakuhai hands combine well with other simple yaku when one honor set anchors the hand.
