What is tanyao?
Tanyao (all simples) is a one-han yaku that forbids terminals (1 and 9) and honor tiles in the completed hand. It is flexible: you may use open melds, so it appears in both defensive and speed-focused play.

Why learners study it
Tanyao is easy to recognize and often reachable early. Teachers use it to practice suit balance and safe discards without honor complexity. Open tanyao is cheaper in han but faster to build.
