Riichiranking

What is pinfu?

Pinfu is a one-han yaku in Japanese riichi mahjong. The hand must be all simples (no terminals or honors in the winning shape), formed from four sequences and one pair, with a two-sided wait on the pair. It is one of the most common beginner yaku.

When it applies

  • Hand is fully closed (no open melds) for the standard pinfu definition in many rules.
  • No triplets or quads in the four melds — only sequences.
  • The winning tile completes a two-sided pair wait (ryanmen).

Pinfu often combines with riichi, tsumo, or ura dora for extra han. Use the generator below to tweak tile art or export a teaching image.
